The Dangers of Nightly Clenching and Grinding

Feb 4, 2021 | Uncategorized

Teeth clenching and grinding, also known as bruxism, is a common habit that many individuals have, but many don’t even know it. Most commonly done while sleeping, those who clench and grind their teeth often experience painful symptoms throughout the day and further health complications. Don’t worry; treatment is available!

Why is Clenching and Grinding a Problem?

In order to smile happily, chew foods, talk, laugh, and feel confident, you need a healthy set of teeth! The strong forces of bruxism, often while sleeping, can threaten the well-being of your teeth and mouth by wearing them down. This wear and tear can lead to fractured, loose, and damaged teeth that a dentist will need to fix.

As well, clenching and grinding can lead to other symptoms, including tension headaches, ear pain, facial pain, and a temporomandibular disorder of the TMJ, or temporomandibular joint. This joint, located in your jaw, allows your mouth to open and close comfortably. With all the problems that bruxism can cause, the pain and discomfort can be significant enough to disrupt your daily activities and leave you with lots of suffering.

How To Stop Clenching and Grinding

Once you’ve identified your teeth clenching and grinding habit, it’s crucial to put in your effort to prevent damage. These tips can help you avoid and treat bruxism.

  • Reduce stress in your life – Often explained as a nervous habit, bruxism may be stopped if you can minimize your stress levels.
  • Perfect your sleep space – You are less likely to clench and grind your teeth if you are in a deep, relaxing sleep. So, ensure you are sleeping in a room that’s cool, dark, quiet, and comfortable to get the most out of bedtime.
  • Sleep on your side or stomach – Individuals who sleep on their back are more likely to clench and grind their teeth.
  • Get a proper night guard – Visit a TMJ specialist and get a made-for-you nightguard to wear comfortably while you sleep to prevent the forces of bruxism from causing damage.
